"Johannes Monno's intelligent way of approaching a piece of music is something that one would wish for much more often in the guitar scene. There is no superficial showmanship, no virtuosity for its own sake, but every note has its meaning, everything is related to each other. And that applies just as much to a baroque sonata by Bach as it does to Spanish guitar music of our century." (Konrad Junghänel)

JJohannes Monno discovered his love of the guitar at the age of six. He was fascinated by the history and development of the instrument from an early age. The harmonious combination of artistic, scientific and pedagogical work is therefore a central concern for him. He has extensively researched the history and playing style of the vihuela da mano, baroque guitar and chitarrone - numerous publications, CDs, lecture series and radio recordings have resulted from this endeavour.

In addition to chamber music collaborations with artists such as Olaf Van Gonnissen, Thomas Müller Pering, Kolja Lessing and the Ensemble Rilegato, Johannes Monno has also repeatedly attracted attention in recent years with thematically finely crafted solo programmes. Critics have repeatedly praised the enormous intensity and colourfulness of his interpretations as well as his stylistic mastery.

He also performs regularly with his children Paulina and Raphael under the motto "MonnoDuoTrio".

As a former DAAD scholarship holder, he initially received lessons from Michael Simon and Wilfried Halter. From 1989-1990, he studied with José Tomas in Alicante (Spain). He then continued his studies at the Cologne University of Music with Hubert Käppel and Konrad Junghänel, who decisively inspired and influenced him for six years.

After holding important positions at the music academies in Hamburg and Frankfurt, Johannes Monno has been a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart since 2004. There he supervises an extremely successful guitar class with numerous international prize winners and teaches the seminar 'History of the Guitar'.

Alongside Thomas Müller-Pering and Olaf Van Gonnissen, Johannes Monno is the editor of the Neue Karl Scheit series at UE and Artistic Director of the SICG Festival, which has been held at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart for the past 10 years
